Paper Mache Easter Eggs -
A great craft of kids! An easy to make craft that even the younger children can get excited about! You can make them egg size of If you make it extra big you can use it as a pinata! This egg is hollow inside. You could put all sorts of goodies in and give it as a gift to a friend. A versatile and fun arts and crafts project!
CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY:
balloon newspaper ONE OF: white glue, mod podge OR paper mache paste (1 part flour to 4 parts water... boil about 3 minutes stirring constantly, add 2 ice cubes and let cool) -- See our "How to Mache" section scissors poster or tempra paint paintbrush glitter or sparkle glue
Prepare your paper mache paste right away so it has time to cool (if using the boil method). I like boiled paste as it's smoother and takes a lot less flour (the REDUCE part of the three R's!). Blow up a balloon. You should use one that's blown up all the way to get a good egg shape, but we always end up playing with ours until they're somewhat deflated which makes the egg a bit rounder than it likely should be. Tear strips of newspaper about 1 " wide and as long as you want. Dip in the paper mache paste, but then remove excess paste (I run it through my fingers to do this) Cover the balloon in no more than 4 layers of paper mache (I always tell the kids no more than 2 as they always put on too much *grin*). If you put on more than 4 it will likely mold before it dries. If you want to fill your egg with something, leave a space where the tied end is. Scrunch newspaper up and line a bowl with it. Set the egg in that to dry. Let dry COMPLETELY. It goes faster in a warm breezy place. If it's a nice day, just stick it outside (just don't forget it if it starts to rain). It takes a day or so to dry. Put whatever goodies you want into your egg. Put them in a plastic baggie first so that they don't get any paper mache goop on them. Apply a second layer of mache. This time covering the opening. The more layers you add, the sturdier it will be. We applied a second layer, but we only did two layers, not 4 this time.
OPTIONAL: we always use scrap white computer paper or toilet paper (don't laugh) for the final layer of all of our paper mache projects. It takes less paint to cover. I find newspaper needs two coats of paint, whereas the white paper only needs one. Toilet paper gives a rough texture which is nice for some animals. We used computer paper for our egg.
Paint the whole thing a base color (we used pink and mixed the red and white together ourselves) Kaitlyn LOVES mixing her own paint. Use paint or markers to add easter egg decorations like stripes, dots or flowers. We used a carrot cut in half to stamp on our purple dots and then circled them with sparkle glue. Let dry.

Odds and Ends Frame - This is a easy to make kid's craft project is great for Father's Day, Mother's Day or any other holiday gift. It went over extremely well, and the children proved to be very creative. The craft idea is easy to personalize and can be made from almost anything!
CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY:
Framing mat board Odds and ends (string, beans, buttons, shells, etc.) Strong white glue (that dries clear) Very sharp craft knife Strong scissors Cutting surface Strong 1" tape (preferably with nylon fibers enmeshed) Markers or crayons, optional
Cut out 2 (8"x8") squares of the mat board using either scissors or the craft knife.
Cut out a 3"x5" section from the center of one of the squares. Use the craft knife for this step. Cut a "v" shape into one edge of the other 8" square. Be careful not to cut it out completely as this will be the stand.
The "v" is in fact two cuts, going diagonally from the bottom to the middle of the frame. If you divide the frame into thirds (along the bottom), then cut diagonally upwards until the two cuts would be about 1 inch apart, this works.
Bend this section back. It will break the mat board, but notentirely. At this point, place a strip of nylon reinforced tapevertically over the break to support the stand.

Tie Card for Dad - Dads love to get crafts made by their kids! This easy to make card is a great way for kids to tell Dad how much he means on Father's Day.
CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY:
A piece of card stock or heavy construction paper Scissors Markers or crayons Glue 5 small white shirt buttons (optional) A piece of colored construction paper or an old tie (ask Dad for an old tie you can cut up, just don't tell him why you want it)
To start making the shirt, cut the top of the card stock into an "M" shape.
Fold over the M-shaped area.
Draw a line down the center.
Either draw 3 buttons, glue on three paper circle (cut with a hole puch) or glue real buttons on the paper to the right of the line you just drew. Either make a tie from construction paper or use the bottom part of an old tie (ask Dad for an old tie you can cut up, just don't tell him why you want it).
Glue the top of the tie to the card. The rest of the tie should be free to move.
Fold down the collar flaps and glue them down.
Either draw a button on each collar flap or glue on real buttons. Write a message to Dad on the tie, on the underside of the tie, and/or on the area of the shirt that is hidden by the tie.
Optional: Make a pocket with a handkerchief. Glue a small paper rectangle (the same color as the shirt) onto the shirt. Only put glue on three sides of the pocket -- do not put glue on the top so the handkerchief can slip in and out of the pocket. Cut out a small piece of paper that will fit into the pocket -- this will be the handkerchief. Write a message to dad on the "handkerchief."

CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY: This easy-to-make duck is a cute craft that is made from a single paper plate and construction paper. More animal crafts
Supplies needed: Paper plate Scissors Glue Stapler A pencil Yellow and orange construction paper or oak tag Crayons, paint or markers Googly eyes (optional) Trace your hands on yellow construction paper, then cut the hands out. If you don't have yellow construction paper, use stiff white paper, then paint it yellow (or use markers). Fold a paper plate in half. Paint it yellow and let it dry
Staple the hands near the fold on one end - these will be the tail feathers. Using yellow construction paper or oaktag, cut out a circle (about 3 inches across or a little bigger) -- this will be the duck's head. Using orange construction paper or oaktag, cut out an elongated oval with one end cut off -- this will be the duck's bill. Fold the end of the beak over, making a small tab (this is where you will put the glue). Glue the bill onto the circle (put the glue on the small tab that will be folded under the bill). Draw eyes above the bill (or glue on small googly eyes). Staple the head to the paper plate (near the fold line, opposite the tail feathers). Using orange construction paper or oaktag, cut out the duck's feet - they should be connected by a short strip of paper. To draw each foot, start with an oval, then draw a zigzag on one end. Fold the paper where the feet meet the strip of paper. Staple each foot to the bottom of one side of the paper plate, right inside the fold line of the foot. You now have a cute duckie that will stand up.

Optional: staple a piece of elastic (about a foot long) to the mask to keep it in place. Decorate your mask with crayons, markers, or paint. Don't forget to draw whiskers!

CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY: Paper Mache Baskets -
Fill these bright baskets with eggs and other Easter goodies. What You Need: Balloons Liquid starch Old newspapers Old cake or pie tin String Paper or plastic cup Colored tissue paper Can of flat white spray paint Jar of gloss medium and varnish Paintbrush
Step 1. Instructions: 1. Tear newspapers into 1-inch-wide strips that are 2 to 3 inches long. Blow up the balloon and tie the end with an overhand knot.
Step 2. 2. Pour starch into the pie tin. Cover the balloon with newspaper strips that have been dipped into the starch. After the balloon is covered with this layer, add a second layer. Overlap the strips and completely cover the balloon, except for the knotted end. Tie a string above the knot of the balloon. Hang the balloon in a cool, dry area to dry overnight. Add more strips, if necessary, and let these strips dry.
Step 3. 3. Snip the knotted end from the balloon, let the air escape, and remove the balloon. Let the paper ball dry for a few more hours.
4. Cut 1 inch off the top of the plastic cup to use for the base. Cover the base with paper strips. Fasten the wide end of the base to the wide end of the ball with more strips. Cover the hole where you removed the balloon with strips. Let the ball dry.
Step 5. 5. Draw a zigzag line around the ball's middle to mark the top of the basket, and a pair of parallel lines over the top (the narrow end) to mark the handle. Cut out the enclosed areas to form the basket. Spray-paint the basket white. When completely dry, apply tissue paper.
TIP: Paint small areas of the basket with the gloss medium and varnish. Lay cut strips of tissue paper over the medium. Paint the medium over the top of the tissue paper. Cover all sides of the basket with the tissue paper. Let dry.

CRAFTS MATERIALS YOUR KIDS WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS CHILDRENS' ARTS AND CRAFTS ACTIVITY: Paper Mache Masks - Materials Needed:
Round Balloon Newspaper Paper Mache Paste Plastic Wrap Paint More Paper Mache Books about Making Masks More Halloween
Instructions: Make sure you cover you work surface well. I usually set down newspaper first and then wax paper or plastic wrap on top of the newspaper. This is a very messy project! Decide what size and shape of mask or head you want and choose the appropriate sized balloon. Blow up the balloon and tie it closed. Find a bowl or cup your balloon can sit in while you work on it. Completely cover the cup or bowl with plastic wrap so the paper mache does not stick to it. Also cover the table or work surface under the cup with the plastic wrap. Set your balloon in the cup or bowl and set it aside.
Tear several newspaper pages into strips. You will want them 1 inch wide and about 6 - 8 inches long. Set them aside.
Use a large bowl to prepare your paper mache paste (Pick a recipe here). The paste will be sticky! I would suggest using a bowl that is easy to soak and clean (glass perhaps) or even a disposable bowl. Now you are ready to start with the paper mache!
Dip the newspaper strips into the glue and spread them onto the balloon. Completely cover the balloon, except for the area where it is sitting in the cup. Set aside and let this first layer dry.
Once the first layer is completely dry, use various supplies to make the facial features on your ballooen if desired. You can make a nose, ears, thick eye brows, lips, etc. Use cardboard, masking tape, foil, or other items shown on this supply list. Use masking tape to hold everything in place.
Add atleast two more layers of paper mache to your balloon. Allow each layer to dry completely before putting on the next layer. Once it is dry, pop the balloon and remove it through the opening left at the bottom (If you cannot get the balloon out, don't worry about it too much - No one will see it).
You can now paint and decorate your mask or face as desired. You can add hair using yarn, thin scraps of material, or anything else you desire.
To make a more realistic shaped face, make as above except use a double layer of tin foil instead of a balloon. Use your face as a mold. Have someone help you gently press the tin foil to your face to get a nice face mold. Wad up newspaper and put it inside the curved section of the foil mold and lay it on your work surface. While applying the first layer of newspaper and paste, make sure not to press on your mold too hard or it will lose it shapes!
