How to Make a Ship in a Bottle

(PARENTAL SUPERVISION AND HELP NEEDED FOR THIS CRAFT) as it is complicated). Materials need are : Wide-mouthed bottle with cap, plaster of Paris (or putty or patching plaster), paint brush, blue poster paint, sandpaper, white thread, cloth for sail, balsa wood (or pine), sucker stick or 3/16" dowel stick, straight pin, needle, crochet hook, glue, knife or scissors, string, and a thumbtack. To make this

(1) Draw hull of boat on small piece of wood and whittle to size that will slip through neck of bottle.

(2) Make a 3/16" hole in hull of boats 2" from front so mast will fit into it. Carve out hold (sketch a). Smooth with sandpaper.

(3) Wash and dry bottle on inside.

(4) Cut triangle sail 1 5/8" high by 1 3/8" wide (sketch b).

(5) Cut 1 3/4" mast from sucker stick or doweling. Cut one end at slight angle so mast will tip when boat is put into bottle. Fasten top of sail to top of mast with thread (sketch c).

(6) Cut 1 1/4" length of doweling for boom. Place boom at bottom of sail and attach corner at C with thread (sketch c). Insert a double thread through corner of sail at B. Tie one end of thread near bottom of mast, and other end to boom. Insert mast into hole in hull. Thumbtack a string from end of boom to back of boat.

(7) Tie end of a 12" thread to top of mast. Insert a straight pin into front end of boat which will face bottle opening (sketch d).

(8) Turn bottle on side and insert small wad of putty or plaster of Paris. Work it down along side of bottle with end of paint brush and shape to resemble waves. Paint blue.

(9) Tip mast toward back of boat and collapse sail so boat will fit into bottle. Keep end of thread attached to mast outside bottle (sketch e).

(10) Press boat firmly into position on putty or plaster, using end of paint brush or pencil. Allow to dry for 24 hours.

(11) When boat is solid, gently pull thread to raise mast to upright position. With crochet hook, loop thread around pin several times. Add a drop of glue to hold thread in place. When dry, cut off loose end of thread with long knife. Place cap on bottle and seal (sketch f).

This craft takes about 2 to 4 hours to make.
