Mitzvah Scale - For a bulletin board or wall decoration, try creating a mitzvah scale. To do this, cut a paper plate in half and glue the two pieces together to make a pocket. Do the same with a second paper plate. These will be the two sides of the scale. Write “mitzvah” (good deed) on one pocket and “aveira” (bad deed) on the other pocket. Staple or tape the pockets to the wall (with the “mitzvah” side lower, of course), and connect them with a horizontal strip of paper.
Pine Cone Decorations - Pine cones are free, but they make great sukkah decorations. Collect a few with your preschooler, and paint them in various colors. You can also dip them in glue and cover them in different colors of glitter. Then tie a string (or piece of yarn) around each pine cone. You can either use the string to tie the pine cones together, making a chain, or tie the ends of all of the strings together and staple or tape it to the sukkah wall, so that the pinecones hang down.
Shabbat Placements - Trace out the words "Shabbat Shalom" on one sheet of construction paper. Ask an adult to help you cut out the letters. Glue the letters to a second sheet of construction paper. Decorate with markers, tissue paper or more construction paper cutouts. Cover one side of the construction paper with a sheet of clear contact paper large enough to overhang the edges. Turn over and cover the other side. Have an adult help you trim off the excess contact paper.
Shofar Collage - Trace the shape of a shofar on a piece of construction paper. Then stack several pieces of construction paper of different colors together and cut out the shofar with a sharp pair of scissors. You should be left with a number of different colored shofars. Fold a piece of construction paper in half and show your child how to glue the shofars onto the card. Write “Happy Rosh Hashanah” on the front of the card, and sign your child’s name on the inside.
Sukkah Paper Chains - Ask a grownup to help you cut 1 to 2-inch wide strips of colored construction paper. If you wish, decorate the strips with markers, crayons, glue and glitter, stamps or other decorative objects. Loop the strips and glue or staple them together. Hang the paper chain in your sukkah for a colorful and festive touch.
