HOW TO MAKE SEWING BOXES & PIN CUSHIONS with OATMEAL CONTAINERS : Arts & Crafts for Kids & Teens

Here is a great craft to make a matching set of sewing box & pin cushion. The sewing box is made with an oatmeal container and the pin cushion is made with its lid. If you are making it for Mom or Grandma, this little gift can serve a double duty as Mom or Grandma will be able to use it for a sewing box and a work bag, too. There is sewing involved in this craft, so don't get in over your head. Ask for help from an adult if you get frustrated.

HOW TO MAKE SEWING BOXES & PIN CUSHIONS with OATMEAL CONTAINERS

CRAFTS MATERIALS NEEDED:

Cylindrical cereal box

Needle

Enamel paint & brush

Thread

Scissors

Bright cotton fabric

Heavy string

Glue or paste

Fancy braid or tape

How to Make Them:

(1) Remove the cover from the cereal box and put it in a safe place. You will not need it to make the sewing box, but you can make another very handy gift with it which will be explained later.

(2) Paint the bottom of the cereal box with enamel paint and allow it to dry thoroughly.

(3) Cut a strip of bright cotton fabric, 7 inches wide and 1 inch longer than the circumference of the box.

(4) With a needle and thread, sew a small seam on the wrong side of the fabric, connecting the 2 short ends.

(5) Turn the fabric right side out. Turn down a 1 inch hem at the top of the fabric for the draw strings.

(6) Stitch the hem twice, once at the edge of the fabric, and once at 1/2 inch up from the edge.

(7) Cut 2 lengths of heavy string for the draw strings. Pull the draw strings through the stitched hem, so that one string can be drawn from one side of the box, and the second string from the other.

(8) Glue or paste the unhemmed edge of the fabric to the top of the box. Allow the glue to dry, then glue a band of fancy braid or tape over the raw edge. This will hide the raw edge and add a decorative touch as well.

HOW TO MAKE MATCHING PIN CUSHION

From the cover of the cereal box that you put aside when you made the sewing box, you can make a handy little pincushion. If you use the same color enamel and the same cotton fabric for the pincushion as you used for the sewing box, you will have a perfect pair of related gifts. Here's how you make it.

HOW TO MAKE MATCHING PIN CUSHION

(1) Paint the cover, inside and out, with enamel paint and allow it to dry thoroughly.

(2) Place the cover on a piece of scrap paper and draw around it with a pencil, to get the size. Cut 2 circles of fabric, 2 inches larger than the circle on the scrap paper.

(3) Place the 2 fabric circles together, right side in, and hem around the edge with a needle and thread, leaving a small opening for turning and filling.

(4) Turn the fabric, right side out, and stuff the pincushion with cotton.

(5) Sew up the opening.

(6) Place a heavy coat of glue, or paste, inside the box cover. While the glue is still wet, force the filled pincushion into the cover so that it makes a nice, rounded mound. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before handling the pincushion any further.
