How to Whittle Wood : Whittling Wood Techniques & Methods for Wooden Crafts for Kids & Teens

(Parental Assistance and Supervision Required) When you are ready to get started with whittling wood, you are going to need an adult present as all aspects of this as it is very dangerous. Ask your Mom, Dad, or one of your grandparents to help you to learn how to whittle wood so you can do it safely!

1. KINDS OF WOOD TO USE

The best wood for whittling is clear-grained soft wood, such as White Pine, Bass, Cottonwood, Cedar, Willow and the harder grades of Balsa. Select kiln-dried wood blocks which are free from cracks and knots. When planning a project make sure the grain of the wood runs up and down. This is most important when making animals having thin parts such as legs, tails and necks.

2. TOOLS FOR WHITTLING

Knife with strong blade for rough, coarse work

Smaller, finer blades for detailed work

Sandpaper, coarse and fine

Finishes such as stain, varnish, shellac, wax or paint.

3. WHITTLING TECHNIQUES: There are two methods of whittling.

(Parental Assistance and Supervision Required)

Whittling

A. The first is the "push" method where the knife blade is pushed against the wood, as in Figure A.

Whittling

B. The second is the "pull" method where the knife blade is pulled towards you, as in Figure B.
