THIS CRAFT REQUIRES PARENTAL ASSISTANCE AND SUPERVISION!!!
Today we will show you how to make a piggy bank that looks like an old-fashioned thermometer...you know...the type that had mercury in it. This craft used a plastic tube(like the kind you put a toothbrush in) and some wood....but when it all comes together, it is a very unique bank. You will want to refer to woodworking techniques before attempting this craft. Have fun!
A round transparent plastic toothbrush holder
A piece of plywood 4" wide and 4" longer than toothbrush holder
Wood block 1" x 2"
sandpaper
drill
2 nails
Scotch tape
file
(Parental Assistance and Supervision Required)
1. Round off corners of plywood thermometer back, with a file and sandpaper smooth. Paint with white paint and allow to dry, as in Figure 1.
2. Center and nail wood block to thermometer back, 2" up from the bottom. Paint with red paint and allow to dry, as in Figure 2.
3. Punch a slot in the toothbrush tube cover large enough for a coin to pass through. Place the tube against the thermometer back, so that it rests on the wood block, and with the slot end up. Fasten tube to the back, at the top and bottom, with strips of Scotch tape. With a ruler and pen and ink, mark off one inch spaces along side of thermometer. (There will be space for 17 pennies within each inch). Drill a hole in the top of the thermometer, for hanging, as in Figure 3.
